The project consists in the redevelopment of Piazza Ficino, aimed at rebalancing the “urban landscape” (the image of the city) and the infrastructures (roads and parking lots), reiterating the attention to “human activities”, to the ways in which the ‘widespread city’ must be integrated into the historic centre and lived by its inhabitants. We want to preserve the memory of an architectural severity, of an enclosure, then rationally conceived to enclose and define a place once crossed by an important communication route, now a sign that divides and perceptually denies the unity of the square.
The project involves the replacement of the “oblique sign” of the (dynamic) path with a (static) “carpet” of marked geometry, through which the imaginary of space is regenerated; a gesture that is both identity and formal, a modus operandi descending from the experiences of contemporary art. The texture of the red signs of the carpet echoes the rhythm of the curtain of the facades and arcades, presenting itself as a decoration and with this also designing the ordering of the market stalls.
